The Film Reference Library, with more than 19,000 book titles and 63,000 film files, holds the world's most extensive English language collection of Canadian film-related material plus the unique archival collections of Canada's most esteemed filmmakers. The Canadian Film Encyclopedia (CFE) includes over 750 film title, filmmaker and subject entries, covering some of Canada's foremost historical and contemporary films and filmmakers.

The Film Reference Library is a research centre for film studies and film appreciation.

If you cannot visit the library in person, we are happy to fulfill your in-depth research request on an hourly fee basis. The FRL also offers several other fee-based services such as scanning, image reproduction, audio-visual duplication, and, photoduplication services. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR THE 7TH ANNUAL HOME MOVIE DAY

Bring in your home movies to the Film Reference Library between June 16th and September 4th for a free inspection and evaluation and a chance to have your film chosen for our Home Movie Day programme to take place on October 17 at TIFF Cinematheque (located in the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Jackman Hall). Admission is free and the event is open to the public.

In addition to seeing your film on the big screen, films selected for the program are also eligible for our Best Home Movie of the Day contest (sponsored by photoplays). The winning film (determined by audience vote) will receive a FREE film-to-video transfer (some conditions apply).


SUBMISSIONS: Call 416-967-1517 for more information and/or to book your appointment.
ACCEPTED FORMATS: 8mm film, Super 8mm film, 16mm film, video (if film original no longer exists or is not available.)
PLEASE NOTE: Not all films will be accepted. Programming decisions will be based on factors including the films’ physical condition, content and length.
